Least count (Meaning):- The minimum value or minimum reading that an instrument can read.
Theodolite: Theodolite is an important instrument used for measuring horizontal and vertical angles in surveying and has wide applicability in surveying such as laying off horizontal angles, locating point on a line, prolonging survey lines, establishing grades, determining the difference in elevation, setting out curves, etc and least count is 20″ (seconds)
Prismatic compass: Prismatic compass is the most convenient and portable form of the magnetic compass which can be either be used as a hand instrument or can be fitted on a tripod and least count is 30′(minutes)
Surveyor’s compass: The surveyor’s compass is usually the larger and more accurate instrument and is generally used on a stand or tripod and the least count is 15′(minutes)
Levelling Staff: Least count is 5mm (0.005m). A levelling staff is a graduated rod of rectangular cross-section, the levelling staff of 3m and 4m are commonly used in practice. Graduation on the staff give the distance from the bottom. 5mm is the thickness of each division and each meter is divided into 200divisions. Levelling staves may be divided into two classes: 1) Self-reading staff, and 2) Target staff.
The reading which can be read directly by the instrument man through the telescope is called self-reading staff.
A target staff is the one in which the reading is taken by a person holding the staff.
Dumpy Level: least count 5mm as it is based on staff reading that why least the count is 5mm.
Total Station: Least count for Angle is 1″(second) & Distance is 1.5 mm
